The benefits for babies and mums

Breastfeeding is an important moment that goes far beyond just simply feeding your baby. This natural gesture offers a series of benefits both for baby and mum and contributes to the physical and emotional well-being of both. In this article, we will look at the numerous advantages of breastfeeding and we will provide some useful information for those mums who are considering this option for feeding their little ones.

The benefits for baby:

  • Excellent nutrition: breastmilk is a complete and balanced supply of essential nutrients for baby’s development. It contains proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and antibodies that protect your baby against infections.
  • Antibodies and Immunity: breastmilk is rich in antibodies that strengthen the newborn’s immune system, protecting him from common illnesses and contributing to his long-term health.
  • Brain development: the fatty acids found in breastmilk, and in particular Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are essential for the development of the newborn’s brain and sight.
  • Ease of digestion: breastmilk is easily digestible for baby’s small stomach and reduces the risk of colic and digestive problems.
  • Emotional bonding: breastfeeding creates a strong emotional bond between mother and baby, leading to a trusting and loving relationship.

The benefits for mum:

  • Postpartum recovery: breastfeeding stimulates the contraction of the uterus and helps mum to recover more quickly after the birth.
  • Reduction in the risk of illness: mothers who breastfeed show a reduced risk of developing illnesses such as breast and ovarian cancer, as well as type 2 diabetes.
  • Weight control: breastfeeding helps burn off the extra calories accumulated during pregnancy, enabling the mother to return to her previous weight more quickly.
  • Emotional bond: breastfeeding offers a precious opportunity to establish a strong emotional bond with baby and this contributes to the psychological well-being of the mother.

Breastfeeding is an act of love and care which offers significant benefits both to the newborn and to the mother. Apart from providing excellent nutrients, it contributes to the physical and emotional well-being of both, promoting a unique bond of affection. However, the decision to breastfeed is an entirely personal one and each mother should decide according to personal needs, emotions, and requirements. Not managing and/or not wanting to breastfeed is perfectly okay and should never lead to a feeling of guilt.
